#tbt features The Voice That Challenged a Nation: Marian Anderson and the struggle for equal rights by Russell Freedman. This biography was published in 2004 and won both a Sibert Medal and a Newbery Honor. All Marion Anderson wanted to do was sing. She loved it and she had a beautiful voice. Eventually, she took voice lessons and began touring but faced the indignities of Jim Crow laws in the south and even empty theaters in the north. She moved to Europe and gained fame and acceptance. Check out this biography to learn more about Marion Anderson and her historic concert in front of the Lincoln Memorial.
