Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. 304 p. Dial Books/ Penguin Young Readers, 1976.

#tbt features Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. This novel was published in 1976 and won the 1977 Newbery Medal. It was a sequel of sorts to a novella, Song of the Trees and the beginning of the Logan family series. It is set during the Great Depression and focuses on Cassie Logan and her siblings as they navigate life in the Jim Crow south. Cassie's grandfather bought 200 acres of land in 1887 and an additional 200 acres in 1919. This has been a point of contention in town and a source of pride for the family. The land is important to the Logan family and so is education. This sweeping saga was followed by quite a few sequels and a prequel. In January, Ms. Taylor will release the tenth book, All the Days Past, All the Days to Come.
