Top Ten Tuesday

This week's TTT theme over at Broke and Bookish is books with under 2000 ratings on Goodreads.

Hm-m, most of my Goodreads list has fewer than 2000 ratings, some because the titles are not out yet and some because they are recently released. This is a list of my favorites:

MG Fiction:

Lily & Dunkin by Donna Gephart. Unabridged audiobook on 7 compact discs. 8 hours, 48 minutes. Read by Ryan Gesell and Michael Crouch. Penguin Random House Audio Publishing Group, May, 2016. 9780451481962.

I just finished this yesterday. This is an important addition to collections everywhere.

Counting Thyme by Melanie Conklin. 300 p. G.P. Putnam's Sons, April, 2016. 9780399173301.

Another one I recently finished. I wrote on GR, "If Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie had a sibling, Counting Thyme would be it." Definitely one for your fans of sad with a side of funny.

The Key to Extraordinary by Natalie Lloyd.

The audiobook is not handy to obtain bibliographic information because I've already dropped it off at school since I'm donating it. But it's gorgeous.

Tombquest book 3: Valley of the Kings by Michael Northrop. Unabridged audiobook on 5 compact discs. 4 hours, 50 minutes. Read by Ramon de Ocampo. Scholastic Inc., 9780545872058.

I am a bit behind in this multi-platform series but am enjoying it. I wish I could get more kids to read it. I am really surprised the series is not more popular.

Non-fiction:

Prairie Dog Song by Susan L. Roth and Cindy Trumbore. 40 p. Lee & Low Books, May, 2016. 9781620142455.

This one just tickled me. I reviewed is here yesterday.

National Geographic Kids: Everything Robotics by Jennifer Swanson. National Geographic Kids Everything series. 64 p. National Geographic, March, 2016. 9781462323324.

Don't miss this even if you don't have a robots program at your school. Review here.

Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer: the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement by Carole Boston Weatherford. Illustrated by Ekua Holmes. unpgd. Candlewick Press, August, 2015. 9780763665319.

This amazing picture book biography in verse earned itself three medals in January!

We Dig Worms by Kevin McCloskey. Unpgd. Toon Books, April, 2015.

I featured this in a NF Monday post here.

Picture books:

Yaks Yak by Linda Sue Park. Illustrated by Jennifer Black Reinhardt. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, March, 2016. 9780544391017.

This book featuring homophones and wordplay is simply hilarious. I grouped it with the non-fiction titles, but it's shelved in the picture book section of all the libraries in my cooperative.

Billy's Booger by William Joyce. unpgd. Atheneum Books for Young Readers, June, 2015. 9781442473515.

This picture book memoir is such a hoot and would be the perfect writing prompt for a memoir exercise in an LA classroom.

Bucky & Stu vs. the Mikanikal Man by Cornelius Van Wright. unpgd. Nancy Paulsen Books/ Penguin Young Readers Group, July 2015. 9780399164279.

I reviewed this wonderful homage to childhood free-play here

  1. Haven't read any of these... But I think that's the point of this week's TTT! Here's mine: https://booksaremyfavouriteandbest.wordpress.com/2016/07/05/just-quietly-this-is-a-great-bunch-of-books/

  2. I found that a lot of my fave books under 2000 were middle grade. Cat Running is a great one, as is Three Terrible Trins, and Spying on Miss Muller. All excellent. All underrated!

  3. I haven't heard of any of these - but We Dig Worms sounds like it would be fun with a younger age group. :)
