#tbt features Rules by Cynthia Lord. Twelve-year-old Catherine loves to draw and doesn't like the fact that she is often placed in charge of her younger brother. She loves David, but he is autistic and sometimes has meltdowns, which embarasses her. Her best friend is away at camp for the summer, but a new girl has moved in next door, and she looks forward to meeting her. She befriends a boy in a wheelchair while waiting for her brother's OT appointment and struggles with a bully who picks on David.
Catherine is relatable in so many ways. Through her, readers will gain insight into how a family navigates the abled world with a differently abled child. Rules was published in 2006 and was Ms. Lord's debut novel. It won a Newbery Honor as well as a Schneider Family Book Award. It was also named an ALA Notable Book and won many State Book Awards.
