#tbt: The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis

Happy snowy Thursday! I hope you're warm and cozy and enjoying this first snowstorm if you are affected by this nor'easter. #tbt celebrates the 25th anniversary of one of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors, The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963. This was Christopher Paul Curtis' debut novel. It won a Newbery Honor, a Coretta Scott King Honor and The Golden Kite Award.

The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963
is narrated by Kenneth Watson and spans the time from January to October of 1963. The family lives in Flint, Michigan but must travel by car south to Kenny's grandmother's in Birmingham, Alabama because his older brother Byron is in danger of becoming a juvenile delinquent. The hilarity in this story is leavened by the racism the family experiences and the September tragedy that helped galvanize the Civil Rights Movement.

Here's the cover for the anniversary edition. I'm bummed that it's not available in hard cover so I can put it in my library.
