Ms. Grande's parents left her and her siblings with a stern grandmother in southern Mexico in order to cross the border for a chance at a better life. Her parents' marriage collapsed, plans fell through and Ms. Grande was preparing for her own dangerous border crossing to live with a father she barely remembered.
