Middle Grade Monday: Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai
Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai. 262 p. HarperCollins Publishers, January, 2013. 9780061962790. (Own.)
Middle Grade Monday features Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhaa Lai. This free-verse narrative is set in 1975 first in Vietnam and then in Alabama. It is the story of ten-year-old Há as she and her family flee Saigon as it falls leaving behind relatives and her POW father. Loosely based on the author's own experience, this is an evocative story of a refugee/ immigrant's journey. It won both the National Book Award and a Newbery Honor.
